Takeout math: the drawing gives you center-to-center. The fitting's takeout is how much of that distance the fitting itself covers. CUT = C2C โ the takeout at each end. Grooved and threaded don't take out the same amount, and a threaded joint also needs thread engagement โ the nipple between two fittings has to make up on both ends, or it physically can't be built. That's what "too short โ move the tee" means, and it's why the guy who does the math never cuts twice.
Then the part nobody writes down: when an obstruction makes you move a head, you didn't just move a head. You changed the spacing on that branch, and spacing is what coverage is figured from. Move it on the sketch first, check the number, then move it in the ceiling.

Give it the hazard and the spacing you're working to. It sets the heads to that spacing instead of to what fit on the drawing.
The measurement the inspector checks first is the one that's easiest to eyeball wrong. It's on the sheet, in writing.
